Tizzy

Tizzy is a one-of-a-kind puppy. From her giant floppy ears, to her loooong torso, to her multi-colors and spots, to her spirited energy. She is spunky, smart, playful, and portable! Tizzy loves people, dogs, toys, treats, and car rides. She is working on house training, walks well on the leash, and sleeps through the night once she learns the routine. She is sassy and sweet and even has a heart-shaped spot on her side to love a little extra.

After a nosebleed at around 4 months old, Tizzy underwent a DNA test and health screening which showed she is a Basset Hound/Poodle mix and has two markers for Basset Thrombopathia, a blood disease common in the breed. In the last couple of months, we’ve tested Tizzy’s blood panels excessively, had experts at Cornell analyze them, and had her seen by BEVS, our local emergency team of vets and specialists.

Tizzy has not had any episodes since her nose bleed at 4 months old and her spirit and puppy energy show that she has no idea she has a disease of any kind. Tizzy lives a normal, enthusiastically happy puppy life in her foster home with two other dogs. She is monitored to ensure she doesn’t chew on sharp objects (sticks, bones, etc) and her people “referee” her playtime with the other dogs to make sure it doesn’t get too rough (if it does it’s because she started it)! As a precaution, Tizzy is never left unsupervised with the other dogs and is crated or gated in a separate room when her people are not home.

Tizzy is looking for a family where she can be a companion and live her life to the fullest. She is not a great candidate for hiking or camping or running…but she could absolutely thrive in an environment with lots of love, supervised socialization, neighborhood walks, and be an errand-running sidekick.

Research about Basset Thrombopathia shows that dogs affected can live typical lifespans. They are, however, prone to more severe bruising and bleeding if they experience an injury or accident. A Chinese herbal medicine, Yunnan Baiyao, is widely available as a capsule, relatively inexpensive, and has about a two-year shelf life. BEVS recommended that Tizzy’s home has some YB on hand should she ever encounter a bleeding risk. It can be given by mouth or the powder inside can be applied directly to a cut. Tizzy responded immediately to YB after her most recent bleeding test which is promising news.

VT Dog Rescue believes Tizzy deserves a chance at a happy, wonderful life no matter what her blood makeup is! Tizzy has been living happily in Vermont since January with no bleeding incidents and winning over the hearts of everyone she meets.
